Clogged drains are a common issue for renters and homeowners alike. Luckily, it's always usually an easy one to fix! If you find yourself struggling with a clogged drain, follow this easy and septic-safe method to see if you can unclog it before needing to reach out to your landlord/property manager or plumbing professionals.
Unclogging a Drain Using Hot Water, Baking Soda, and Vinegar
Items Needed:
1 liter + 1 cup of nearly boiling water (185℉–200℉)
½ cup of baking soda
1 cup plain/white vinegar
Instructions:
Pour a liter of almost boiling water down the drain you're trying to unblock.
Put ½ a cup of baking soda in the drain, leaving it for 5 minutes.
Pour a whole cup of plain vinegar, along with a whole cup of (almost) boiling water down the drain.
Fit the drain plug in the stopper, leaving for 10 minutes.
Remove the drain plug and viola! Your drain should be unclogged.
Why Does Boiling Water Unclog Drains?
Solubility is also crucial; many substances that block drains are more soluble in hot water. Therefore, pouring boiling water can dissolve some elements of the clog directly. Additionally, thermal expansion caused by heat can create shifts in pipes, which may help dislodge obstructions.
What Should I Do If My Drain is Still Clogged?
If you tried this step-by-step process and find that your drain is still clogged, try it at least once more. Sometimes those peskier clogs can need a little more TLC before dissolving. If you try again and still find the clog persisting, you should reach out to your landlord, property manager, or plumber.
